Dressing in a Recession

Even though the economy has been whispering recession for a while, the effects of the decline probably weren't a major creative influence on fashion designers and their vision of Spring 2009. It's still unknown how current events will influence fashion's direction over the next few seasons, or how consumers will respond to what is offered.

Traditionally, the retail fashion buying cycle begins one year before the actual wearing season, with orders for the clothing placed six months prior. What we see in magazines and on runways today was actually created and developed way before most of us knew we wouldn't have reliable jobs or that stocks would be so low, or even that Obama had a chance of winning the election. Trend forecasting reports have been pushing bright colors as a solution to practical spending....as put by Michael Kors, "When the economy is tough, people want something that looks optimistic. No matter how much doom and gloom goes on, they want to believe that anything is possible."

I don't think it will be that simple to predict this time around. With economists predicting a two year recession, and artists of all mediums and sizes struggling to survive the sudden lack of available credit, it'll be interesting to see both creative and business design choices.

Of course the 1930s come to mind. Depression/Recession comparisons are everywhere, so why not apply it to clothing? Despite the reputation of the decade, Depression Era fashion was far from depressing. The 1930s were actually pretty historic when it comes to style. Hemlines got shorter, new fabrics such as nylon were developed, Schiaparelli invented the zipper, the ready to wear industry was furthered as uniforms were mass produced, and women had their 1st real need for for both daywear and nightwear...

Regardless of a woman's budget, a dress in the 1930s would be worn often and its design had to stand up to being worn well. Clothing couldn't look "out" after several seasons of being worn. Styles became more simple and accessories became important- simply because they had the ability to change the look of the same outfit from one day to the next. Maybe our financial situation and to be determined needs will quality over quantity as a breath of fresh air from the copycat times fashion is currently experiencing.

RVA's 2008 Year in Review: What a City

While many amazing bands, venues, artists and events of all kinds are summarized in this annual issue of RVA Magazine, (I would have to copy and paste the entire magazine to showcase all the amazing folks mentioned) I couldn't help but notice that they forgot to include both Nara and Rumors in this compilation issue. Both locations helped save the live music scene in this city over the past 2 years, by hosting live shows of all genres (from hip hop, to jazz, to metal) multiple times a week on top of their normal business operations and (not to be biased) should have been noted.

However, take a look at these wonderful entries...

I was lucky enough to work with Nick Ghobashi on October's skate photoshoot, and every word I wrote about him in the following summary is the absolute truth. Check out his site at http://www.scatterbrainphoto.com

I am so, so glad Dominion got some love. This store still feels like home to me, and Kim and Maurey have done so much for this city, from organizing skate demos and movie premieres, to simply giving kids a place to lurk when they've got nowhere else decent to be.

And of course we can't forget about Henry. Rudy helped me out with sound for my 1st ever fashion show when I was still in VCU, and Billy has withstood through many of my post-mimosa ramblings on my walk past his store to my house. I covered their t-shirt collaboration with the Valentine Historical Center in RVA's November issue, and I know these boys will continue to make local history in months to come.

A picture is a thousand words

Our new website is almost done and we are so excited about the new structure of the store. The fashion industry has been hit hard during the current recession we have been in for the past 2 years. After much brainstorming and market research we have made the decision to become a high end consignment shop. We will be scouring Virginia in our search for the greatest style's we can find. Offering 55% store credit for lightly used stylish threads and 35% cash. Watch out for major changes. We are young, we are adapting. Look recession chic off a modest budget.

We had a photo shoot on Sunday combining our independent lines with our preloved items. The combination is not only affordable it is fashion forward. Combining styles from the 50's with urban attitude. Thank you to all of our models. Thankyou Aeneus for doing makeup and thank you Caitlin for the amazing photography. http://www. flickr. com/photos/xensaboteur/sets/72157612145318481/

Eclectic Style hits Harrison St.

Thank God for the holidays. Family obligations force friends from far away to become present in the streets of Richmond. I've actually been quite disappointed lately in the lack of style I've seen around for the past few weeks. I see how it is the VCU kids leave town and now we see the true Richmond. Sad. Step it up cats. I am growing tired of being the best dressed person everywhere I go. Give me some competition. Please
