In the Age Of Robots. Future Functional

Transformers don’t care about people, period. That's what I learned growing up in the 1980s, religiously watching a race of robot Titans from outer space wage a secret war on Earth. Transformers didn’t even want to be seen by humans. They casually blended into our neighborhoods by turning themselves into all kinds of cutting-edge machinery — you know, like cassette players. I sat in front of the TV, my Kool-Aid-stained mouth agape, as these armored, primary-colored toys engaged in interstellar combat with only a passing interest in us. Like a mechanical pantheon of Greek gods, the Autobots and Decepticons were smarter, older, and vastly more powerful than human beings. They tromped through our world but were thoroughly wrapped up in their own concerns, usually involving their home planet, Cybertron. The Zeus of mythology appeared on Earth as a swan; Optimus Prime moved around suburbia disguised as a bright red and blue 1970s Freightliner semitrailer truck that could fly. Now that was cool.

So when I started building robots myself, it was only natural that the independence of Prime and his crew stuck with me. Remember that before Transformers, sci-fi robots in the US were either scary (HAL 9000) or infantilized (every robot in Star Wars). We giggled at the antics of C-3PO and Artoo, but they lacked any real autonomous authority. Megatron as a giant handgun—now that guy had bucketloads of authority. With their blatant disregard for people, Transformers burned into my psyche the idea that robots didn’t have to depend on—or be limited in the same ways as—humans. That was the kind of robot I wanted to build.

It’s a subtle but important lesson: Ballsy independent robots designed to sense, think, and act according to their own, nonhuman rules can transcend human abilities rather than pathetically imitate them. Real-life examples of this abound today: In 2001, the Deep Space 1 smart probe used an AutoNav system to choose its own path to Comet Borrelly; the Seahorse autonomous underwater vehicle from the US Navy can search unmanned for submerged mines; and in recent military demonstrations, bullet trackers like iRobot’s RedOwl can pinpoint camouflaged snipers in milliseconds. None of these robots want to be a human, hurt a human, or even ask a human for directions.

Were the researchers behind these machines inspired by Transformers? You’ll have to ask them. But I think if you look closely you’ll see the distinct legacy of an Autobot or Decepticon lurking in the DNA of these and many other projects around the world. And hey, who knows, maybe one day someone will create a new silicon-based life-form, one that looks cool and conducts awesome secret missions with little or no input from pesky humans. Oh, and maybe sometimes turns into a dinosaur.

i-foot Transformers introduced America to the badassitude of giant robots. Of course, it wasn’t long before we started imagining riding around in these walking machines. In 2004, Toyota unveiled this bipedal vehicle, called the i-foot. Guided by a joystick, the 7'9" walker will kneel down to allow a passenger to climb aboard.

Justin Optimus Prime had to be careful around delicate human beings and so do real-world robots. Designed at the German Aerospace Center, the 3-foot-tall Justin can detect the amount of force needed for a specific task and adjust accordingly. This makes it capable not only of opening bottles and emptying trash cans, but also of patting its creators on the head without crushing their skulls.

Daniel Wilson (daniel_h_wilson@yahoo.com) is the author of How to Survive a Robot Uprising.

For as long as I can remember I have always been infatuated with science, robots, engineering and space exploration I may never have my own robot but that doesn't mean I can't pretend that I am one. In the future clothing will not only be visually pleasing but it will also keep the body at a constant healthy temperature. Clothing will emit it's own light as well as store water. Nylon and Lycra will now protect people from being tracked by satellites and will speed agility and teleportation.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK 2008

An hour plane ride and two glasses of wine later we arrive in New York City. We remind ourselves.. "DONT SPEND TOO MUCH MONEY" " DONT BUY EVERYTHING"....

We put on our fanciest dresses and we flag down a cab. We go from showroom to showroom hand picking the perfect outfits for fall at Rumors Boutique. We have sooo many new lines coming in. Most of our time is spent sipping wine and bragging about how wonderful our city is to our new designers and just about everyone we meet.... Also hanging out at the Levee and drinking the Sportman Special. a shot of whiskey and a beer for two please... it almost felt like home..... SO LETS TALK FASHIONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN....

First off, when taking the train to williamsburg !!dress to impress!!!. One minute I am sitting next to a crazy person who is trying to give me 3 dollars to tell him the future.. and the next stop I feel like I'm in a music video for M.I.A. Its been cold for maybe 5 hours and everyone already has their signature hoodie, flat comfortable knee high boots, loose black scarf and button down vest on. Honestly people can hate as much as they want on Willamsburg brklyn but it is a street fashion photographers heaven. Also if your ipod touch doesn't match your glasses or your handbag you need to replace it.... NOW........

Okay sorry back to fashion..... here are the trends for the next season. I have combined new york fashion with European fashion week because new york honestly was a bit of an upset for me. I love my American designers but wheres the originality wheres the insanity. Just because the economy is depressing doesn't mean your wardrobe should be. It seemed that sheer shirts were the bigggg thing. I am 100 percent against them, they are horrible. I want to clothe the working woman not undress her. I don't know many women who can go to class or work wearing a sheer mesh top.... Honestly look at that. HOw long did that design take, And how does anyone over an A cup wear these outfits. Are we going to bed or are we going out on the town. WHO KNOWS........

sheer gross

Luckily I fell in love twice.... This is what fashion is to me. Somewhere lost between vintage and crazy we have Christian Kane and Luella Bartley . Look how well constructed each piece is. You can not simply place these garments on your body, you have to embody the whole attitude. Both these designers have a way of making each piece pop at you. Your outfit should tell a story. Mood changing fashion. This is why I love Fashion.

So more importantly. Here is the best of the best.... amazing affordable fashion by amazing designers. This is what I am aspire to dress like for the upcoming season.

AND BIGGEST TREND.. other than the horrible sheer shirts. the one sleeved dress. I'm against it.. but I'm slowly accepting it... straight skirts.. hike it up as high as you can ladies... And it seems that androgyny is here to stay. Steal your girlfriend jeans. and ladies steal your boyfriends button up shirts. WE ARE GOING CRAZY........And my favorite trend.. New back cleavage.
